Team Structure

White Team

  • Serve as impartial on-site evaluators for executing of blue team activities.
  • Verify injection scenarios are completed.
  • Provide judging services for competition activities.
  • Can not have outside involvement or conflicting interest with any blue team.
  • Are industry partners or sponsors.

Blue Team

  • Each blue team will consist of college students from the same institution.
  • Will consist of no more than eight team members during the competition.
  • OR,
  • May consist of eight team members and one team captain.
  • Students from graduate and / or undergraduate programs who are participating in the cyber defense competition.
  • Members sign a participation agreement, including statement of ethics and a profession conduct statement.
  • Students must have completed a minimum of one semester in the participating institutions networking or security curriculum.
  • Are not employed in any security role prior to enrollment into the participating institutions security or networking program.
  • Students maintain a minimum of ½ time status (minimum of six credit hours) during the term the competition is conducted.

Participating Blue Teams

  • Baker College of Flint
  • Washtenaw Community College
  • Davenport University - Kalamazoo
  • Michigan Tech

Red Team

  • Network penetration testers from industry.
  • Scan and map the network of each competition team.
  • Assess the security of each team network.
  • Approved by the competition director.
  • Capture the flag on each Blue Team network (source code acquisition, financial info, lose points).
  • Follows rules of engagement for the competition.
  • Objective is to penetrate each blue teams network.

Gold Team

  • Administration and staff of the cyber defense competition.
  • May issue or control the timing of injects.
  • Manage event activities and events such as:

    Greet people
    Organize food, awards
    Assist in setting up the competition
    Assist with hotel / travel arrangements
    Can be members of participating schools

Chief Judge

  • Final authority on scoring decisions or issues relating to equity or fairness of events or activities.
  • Can not be from any institution that has a competing Blue team or have any interest in any team outcome.
  • Can not be a current, previous or prospective academic advisory board member of any blue team institution.
  • Ideally, should be a representative from industry.

Competition Director

  • Coordinates activities during the event.
  • Works with industry partners to orchestrate the event.
  • Approves the Chief Judge.
  • Approves responsibility assignments to white and gold team members.
  • Has the authority to dismiss any team, team member or visitor for violation of competition rules, inappropriate or unprofessional conduct.

Faculty Representative

  • A faculty member or representative of the participating Blue Team.
  • May not provide any instruction to their representative Blue Team members during the competition hours.
  • May assist in competition labors as directed.
  • May not be involved in any scoring or decisions that involves a participating institution or blue team.
